The wise men who were guided to Jesus by the star, illustrate for us how people move from curiosity about Christ to faith in him, and they show us the cost that we must “pay” to follow him. We see that they were guided to faith by three “words” – through the word of general revelation (creation), through the word of special revelation (the Bible) and through the living Word, Jesus Christ. In response to their faith, they offered up three gifts – gold, frankincense and myrrh – all gifts fit for a King and that point to The King – especially for a King that would suffer for our sins. These gifts are also illustrative of the things we are to offer up to Christ because he is our king. Gold reminds us our service will be costly, frankincense that we are to be living sacrifices and myrrh that we must die daily if we are to follow Christ.
