The unity of the church is not something that needs to be created, for we are one by virtue of God’s work. We have unity in the one Spirit, who makes us a part of the one body and gives us one hope. We have unity in the one Lord (the Son), who has given us one faith to believe and one baptism by his cleansing work. We also have unity in the Father, who is over all, through all and in all. One can no more destroy the unity of the true church as God sees it than one can destroy the unity within the Godhead itself. However, we must seek to maintain the unity he has established in practice and before others, and this takes the work of being peacemakers.
