Because the love of Christ is so central to this new community that God is building, Paul gives much time to it in his prayer. He first acknowledges that believers, by virtue of their being “in Christ” – are already rooted and grounded in his love and thus are secure in God’s hands, for nothing can separate believers from Christ’s love. Based on this, Paul prays that believers would be able to comprehend and know this reality. He prays they would comprehend the breadth, length, height and depth of Christ’s love, and that they would understand that Christ’s love, while knowable to an extent, is beyond our understanding. This sermon looks at all these realities and considers how they bring hope even to our darkest days.
