The Innocent One is Buried and is Raised from the Dead

Luke 23:50-24:12

The transition from Christ’s humiliation to his exaltation happens in a manner that helps prove Jesus is indeed raised from the dead – a doctrine that holds great hope for all who trust in him. The actions of Joseph of Arimethea (and Nicodemus) and the women who had followed him from Galilee and who stayed for his crucifixion help prove the certainty of Christ’s death and burial. By looking at the subsequent actions of the women on Resurrection Sunday, we find hope. This sermon first considers what these faithful women found – an empty tomb and two angels. We then consider what they heard – a rebuke/encouragement to remember the words of Christ (words that brought hope). Here we are reminded of the peace and hope we lose by ignoring/forgetting Jesus word. Finally, we consider how the women responded – by obeying the angel’s command to go and tell the disciples what happened. Eventually his followers would be overwhelmed by the hope of the resurrection that these women “preached”. We end by looking at the hope Christ’s resurrection gives to all who believe. Nit only do we receive future eternal life – we get help now because we are united to Christ. His resurrection means we can live now in newness of life!
