A King for All Seasons

Luke 19:28-44

On the first “Palm Sunday”. Jesus road into Jerusalem as the promised King. The people welcomed him and sang his praise, but they did not understand the implications of their words. They did not understand because they did not understand the kind of Kingdom he came to establish. The kingdom Christ was establishing was not the national, earthly kingdom they wanted, it was spiritual in nature (although Christ’s rule affects all things and will one day involve bringing all nations completely and finally under his rule). The kingdom Christ established was internal (“within you”), it is a kingdom of power and of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. To bring this all together – if the kingdom is within us there must be some sensing of its presence; if it consists in power, then it must go beyond words and do something in and for us – it will not leave us unchanged; and if it consists in “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” – there must be some tasting of these spiritual truths – some experience of them. The Kingdom Christ set up must impact every sphere and season of live – for we are subjects in his realm.
